Abstract: | The last Anglo-Asante War of the nineteenth century or the first of the twentieth century, from April 1900 to January 1901, is known to the Asante people as the Yaa Asantewaa Sa (War), while to the English it is known as the Asante Rebellion of 1900. This article examines the military role of Yaa Asantewaa, Queen-Mother of Edweso, in this last military encounter between the Asante and the British. It is based on contemporary written sources by British participants in the 1900-1901 war and oral material from the author's and Thomas Lewin's fieldwork in Ghana. The article presents revelant biographical and genealogical information on Yaa Asantewaa, and fleshes out the circumstances that pivoted her into a leadership role in 1900. The article further examines in detail the military engagements between the Asante and the British in 1900, discussing military strategy and the outcomes of the major battles. Notes, ref. |
