Abstract: | This article provides a late-twentieh century perspective of Yaa Asantewaa in Edweso, Asante and Ghanaian history and reviews the reconstruction of historical memory in the Yaa Asantewaa centenary celebrations packaged by tourist-conscious Asante chiefs and national officials in Ghana. It shows how various constituencies managed, quite successfully, to claim the Yaa Asantewaa legacy during the centenary celebrations: the Ghanaian State, the then ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Tourist Board, those interested in the empowerment of women, and the Asante.
