Abstract: | Ndebele fiction (Zimbabwe) employs both the flashback and the flash-forward technique. Common forms of flashback found in many Ndebele novels are the use of an event to trigger old memories, the use of old pictures which remind a character of the good old days, and the use of old letters. Flash-forward techniques include the use of dreams and omens based on Ndebele culture. Although Ndebele writers have adopted the flashback and flash-forward techniques from European literature, they have adapted them to suit the specific cultural forms of Ndebele society. The work of novelists B. Makhalisa, E.S.K. Hleza, J. Sibanda, N.S. Sigogo, E.M. Ndlovu, and P.M. Khumalo is used as illustration. Ref., sum. |
