| Abstract: | This article calls for more attention to be paid to the theory underlying the nature and process of the acquisition of culture within the context of complex culture. First, it indicates some of the underlying assumptions of early theoretical approaches employing the concepts enculturation and socialization. Second, a new emergent paradigm on childhood as a cultural construction is discussed, as well as the contributory sociopolitical developments in the world and South Africa. Third, complex culture is presented as the major context of the process of culture acquisition. Special attention is paid in this regard to the perspective of culture as systems of meaning. Fourth, a few considerations for future research are suggested. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. in English and Afrikaans. |
