Abstract: | The secondhand clothes ('salaula') trade is an important element in the economy of Zambia. Indeed it has been steadily increasing in importance since the 1920s. Secondhand clothes give people more choice of stylish, well-cut clothes which are preferred to the poor quality material produced in Zambia itself. The practice of buying secondhand clothes has grown rapidly in recent years, given extra impetus by a process of the liberalization of the economy and concomitantly the spread of globalization which provides a ready flow of the desired product. Although some middle-class Zambians are embarassed by the phenomenon, the demand for 'salaula' is unlikely to decline for many years to come. Notes., ref. |
