Abstract: | On 29 May, 1999, General Olusegun Obasanjo (rtd) was sworn in as twelfth head of State in Nigeria. Twenty-two years earlier he had voluntarily relinquished the same position to ensure that democratic rule was restored in Nigeria. He handed over to a democratically elected president, but four years later the army was back in the saddle in Nigeria. Now he has re-emerged from the 'valley of the shadow of death' to become the third democratically elected head of State in Nigeria. This paper examines the set of circumstances that led to this turn of events and analyses his chances of leading Nigeria towards a sustainable democracy. It pays attention to the formation of political parties, the electoral process in 1998/99, and the role of the international community in Nigeria's transition process. Bibiliogr., notes. |
