| Abstract: | Making human rights a reality in Africa entails a search of three dimensional concepts which are closely interlinked and when dissected expose a set of values and principles that are subject of the current human rights struggle on the continent. These three notions are inherent dignity of the human person, democracy and constitutionalism. For these elements to prosper and flourish there is a need for a constant search for their realization and fulfilment. This article explores these three dimensional concepts, their application and current challenges facing their realization, and situates the current efforts to protect and promote human rights in Africa in a broader framework of competing interests and demands that militate against univerial freedom and rights for all.
