Abstract: | This special issue is devoted to State failure, State collapse and State reconstruction worldwide. It includes chapters of a general nature as well as country studies. General studies also presenting information on Africa include: The challenge to the State in a globalized world (Christopher Clapham); State collapse and fresh starts: some critical reflections (Martin Doornbos); State collapse and its implications for peace-building and reconstruction (Alexandros Yannis); Privatization of security, arms proliferation and the process of State collapse in Africa (Abdel-Fatau Musah); State collapse as business: the role of conflict trade and the emerging control agenda (Neil Cooper); Rebuilding State institutions in collapsed States (Marina Ottaway); and Social reconstruction and the radicalization of development: aid as a relation of global liberal governance (Mark Duffield). One country study is devoted to Nigeria: The politics of insurgency in collapsing States (William Reno). Other country studies discuss Georgia, Afghanistan, Cambodia and East Timor.
