Abstract:Despite claims to the contrary, this article argues the case that Botswana did suffer from Dutch disease as a result of the diamond boom of the 1980s. Evidence is a real exchange rate appreciation, the effect of which was a decline in some manufacturing industries, most notably textiles, and an associated excessive spending, both government recurrent spending, notably on civil servants' salaries, and household consumption spending.
