| Abstract: | The shift in university governance in South Africa's supposedly 'liberal' universities from 'racial liberalism' towards corporate authoritarianism is putting academic freedom to the test. Academics are becoming ever more subordinated to administrators, who in turn are becoming increasingly intolerant of robust internal dissent. A detailed interpretation of the events that led to the firing of Robert Shell from Rhodes University in 2001 is illustrative of university management's increasing propensity to resort to executive powers to secure the dismissal of academics who are perceived as 'awkward' and embarrassingly critical of university power holders.
