Abstract: | Based upon family diaries written in Amharic (sometimes in Oromo using Amharic script) and in Arabic, as well as oral traditions, this study highlights some aspects of the trade activities between the city of Harar and the region of Shäwa (Ethiopia) at the end of the nineteenth century.
