Abstract:Following a brief historical overview of newspapers and the newspaper industry in Nigeria, this paper examines the use of Nigerian newspapers as instruments for promoting the teaching of reading and writing and, ultimately, the building of literate communities. It does so by exploring the in-built facilities of newspapers, which enable them to serve as catalysts for literacy development: newspapers have something of interest for every category of society. The paper focuses on students in a formal classroom setting. It is based on an ongoing study regarding the effectiveness of English-medium newspapers for facilitating literacy empowerment.
