Abstract: | South Africa's performance in dealing with the rising unemployment since the 1970s has been dismal. Based on a sample period from 1970-2000, this paper develops a labour market model of the South African economy. The model comprises six behavioural equations, namely the demand for skilled labour, the demand for unskilled labour, total labour supply, the skilled labour supply, the real skilled wage rate and the real unskilled wage rate, both CPI (consumer price index) deflated. Total labour demand is determined as the total of the skilled and unskilled labour demand. Unskilled labour supply can be derived from total labour supply and the skilled labour supply. The estimated model will be used in follow-up research to test the hypothesis of structural unemployment empirically. App., bibliogr., notes, ref. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
