Abstract: | This report on drought in Kenya is the result of a collaboration between the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Kenyan government. It assesses the impacts of drought on the water sector; forest, fisheries, wildlife, wetlands and non-living resources; and land use, livestock and agriculture. Furthermore, the report pays attention to the policy and legal framework and includes recommendations for follow-up actions with respect to drought. Data collection methods included interviews with stakeholders; a literature review; and field visits to a sample of 15 districts in six of Kenya's eight provinces. The reports of the field visits (including their recommendations) are included in an annex. A stakeholders' meeting was held on 22 February 2001, in Machakos, to discuss the findings of the draft version of the present report. |
