Abstract:One of the major problems facing Nigerian higher education today is underfunding. Government priority for education is very low and government funding of higher education is steadily declining. The inadequate funding of higher education has had profound effects on teaching and research, while universities have been forced to look for alternative ways of funding. This paper examines alternative modes of financing higher education in Nigeria and the implications for university governance on the basis of a study carried out in 1995-1996 among four universities. Three of these are first-generation universities, viz. the Universities of Ibadan, Ife and Lagos, while the fourth, University of Ado-Ekiti (formerly Ondo State University, Ado-Ekiti), is a second-generation university. Alternative sources of income include endowments, foreign grants, fees/levies, and commercial ventures and university-productive sector linkages. The payment of fees is a highly contentious issue, while commercial ventures are often fraught with problems of management. The paper concludes that universities in Nigeria need more pragmatism in handling their financial problems. They need to devise a way to reduce administrative costs so that more funds can be directed towards teaching and research. Bibliogr., sum. in English and French. [ASC Leiden abstract]
