Abstract: | Libation, one of the most important traditional religious rituals in Akan society, Ghana, is a great source of material for the performance of highlife songs. Examples of both traditional libations, collected between 1969-1971 in Techiman Traditional State, and highlife music, show that proverbs, similes, and other traditional metaphors embedded in traditional libations help to give meaning to the performance of highlife songs. Although there are differences in the presentation of the traditional and highlife libation texts, the relationship between both versions is that they point to one analogy. Bibliogr., notes, ref.
