Abstract:In 1887 the British transferred the capital city of Gold Coast from Cape Coast to Accra and introduced a process of urbanization in line with concepts and values completely alien to the traditions and culture of the Ga Mashie, the indigenous inhabitants. This has impacted on the function and structure of the 'wei' (singular 'we'), the lineage or extended family, which is the basic domestic and social unit of Ga Mashie society. Notes, ref.
