Abstract: | This paper provides a comparison between houses delivered by means of the People's Housing Process (self-help) in Thabong, Welkom, South Africa, and housing units delivered by means of a contractor (contractor-driven) in Freedom Square, Mangaung-Bloemfontein. The comparison is conducted against the theoretical perspective of the work of J.F.C. Turner (1976, 1978). In keeping with Turner's views, it was found that in Thabong, where the self-help project was utilized, the housing units on average had more rooms than in the contractor-driven Freedom Square project, and that respondents were considerably more satisfied with their housing. In addition, the Thabong project had also ensured a larger degree of community involvement in the building process (which probably ensured that the money remained in the community), as well as a larger degree of investment of own resources during the process. It also seems that the potential to kick-start a secondary housing market is somewhat better in Thabong than in Freedom Square. The paper concludes with some policy considerations. Bibliogr.
