| Abstract: | Pull Ourselves Up or Die Out is a field report which provides visual and factual information on the situation of the !Kung San people at Tshum!Kwi, in Namibia, where N!ai, the Story of a !Kung Woman was filmed. The report includes footage shot at or near Tshum!Kwi between the years of 1980 and 1984 and was an outgrowth of research conducted by John Marshall and Claire Ritchie during those same years. Highlighted in the taped report are: problems and issues which affect the !Kung as the economy continues to shift from subsistence to cash-based; scenes and interviews surrounding the possible establishment of a game reserve in Eastern Bushmanland; land development of cattle farming and husbandry by !Kung groups; confrontations with South African administration officials regarding the rights to install a water pump and the rights of !Kung to use water.
