Abstract: | The so-called good governance agenda has become a major vehicle for the globalization of Western-inspired standards of political and economic management. Much of the international effort to promote the rules of good governance is focused on Africa. Contrary to the popular view that the good governance agenda is being imposed from outside on an unwilling continent, African States have in fact over many years voluntarily subscribed to the standards of good governance. Challenging another common notion, it is argued here that the good governance agenda is both suited and essential to African countries desperate to improve their lot.
