Abstract:This collective volume contains most of the papers presented at the African Association for the Study of Religions (AASR) Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya, in July 1999. The geographical focus is East Africa. J.N.K. Mugambi's paper is on religion and globalization. A.B.T. Byaruhanga-Akiiki discusses African religion. Adam Arap Chepkwony traces the teaching of African religion at the tertiary level in East Africa. Zablon Nthamburi explores the historical background of mainline Christian churches and Fidon R. Mwombeki discusses their contemporary dynamism. Philomena N. Mwaura outlines the main characteristics of African Instituted Churches. Therese Tinkasiimire discusses new religious movements in Uganda. Hassan A. Mwakimako focuses on Islam, with particular reference to the Kenya coast. Mark Perry's paper is on the Bahai faith, while Francis Inanga describes the Unification Church. Kennedy Otsola outlines the beliefs and practices of one of the Hindu communities in Nairobi, the Arya Samaj. O.M.J. Nandi describes the Krishna Consciousness Movement, which is one of the recent offshoots of Hinduism.
