| Abstract: | Preliminary report on four field seasons of archaeological excavation and research at Aksum, Ethiopia, conducted under the auspices of the Centre for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritage of the Ethiopian Ministry of Culture in November and December of each year from 1993 to 1996. The project seeks to explain Aksum's position as urban centre and to further knowledge about many aspects of ancient Aksumite civilization, including those pertaining to non-elite populations, the domestic economy, technology and funerary customs. It also seeks to establish a firmer chronological framework than hitherto available and to provide training for Ethiopian archaeologists. Bibliogr. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
