Abstract:Unlike the traditional vertical broad loom, which is mainly found in Nigeria, the horizontal narrow strip loom can be found throughout West Africa. Over the years, the origin and spread of the narrow loom has been the subject of a major debate amongst scholars, many of whom believe that the narrow loom has a non-African origin. The present paper examines these theories, but advocates an alternative hypothesis, suggesting that the origin of the loom might be somewhere between the present-day countries of Mali and the Senegal coast.
