Abstract: | This paper investigates the factors that are important in determining youth earnings in the formal sector in Harare, Zimbabwe. It uses a sample cohort of 660 21-year olds employed in the formal sector, who were observed in 1996. The theoretical approach adopted is that of human capital theory. The survey collected information on the individuals' earnings, employment history, education, occupation and training as well as socioeconomic characteristics, including gender. The results suggest that human capital variables are important determinants of youth earnings in the formal sector. Such variables include the number of years spent in education, the highest level of education achieved and the choice of subjects at GCE 'O' level. This confirms predictions made by human capital theory. Furthermore, contrary to evidence found in other developing countries, no evidence was found to support the gender discrimination hypothesis.
