| Abstract: | In 1901 and 1903, three contracts were signed between Rhodesia Railways Ltd and Pauling and Company for the construction of a railway from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). The line was officially taken over for traffic on 20 June 1904. Timetables from that time show mixed trains with passengers and goods. This paper describes the history of this railway line from its beginning up to the present. It pays attention to special trains for VIPs and overseas tour groups; the role of the line in World War II; royal trains; the building of Victoria Falls Bridge; Victoria Falls Hotel; deviations (Deka-Victoria Falls; Sawmills-Bulawayo; Dett-Mbarira (New Wankie) and Thomson Junction); the development of the track-side infrastructure; rail safaris; the transport of coal; and locomotives.
