Abstract: | This paper examines the challenges posed by constructing the 'popular' with the intention of defining, determining and cataloguing Ugandan 'popular' music for purposes of archiving it. It adds to the many voices debating the conceptualization of the 'popular' and contends that while its definition depends on the intention of the one defining, the popular is also time and culture-specific. The question is: how do the constraints on constructing music as being 'popular' influence the decisions as to what Ugandan music should be archived as 'popular'? Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum.
