Abstract: | The period from the Great War through to the end of World War II (1914-1945) was characterized by the relative stagnation of development in tobacco cultivation in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). This paper traces the history of tobacco cultivation during this period. First, it pays attention to the relations between the planters and the trade and presents statistics for tobacco production. Next, it examines fertilizers and chemicals used in tobacco cultivation; tobacco plant diseases; planting methods; leaf reaping; tobacco curing; and tobacco varieties. Ref. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
