Abstract:Established in 1950 at the initiative of the imperial government, the colleges constituting the University College of Addis Ababa (UCAA) were integrated in 1962 to form the Haile Sellassie I University (HSIU), later to be called Addis Ababa University (AAU). Throughout the 1970s (except in 1974-1976), and especially in the 1980s, AAU expanded and diversified its academic programmes and the number of students rose dramatically, despite the limited growth in infrastructure, budgetary allocation and facilities. The rise, development and impact of the student movement put HSIU/AAU under the national spotlight, gave an impetus to the process of the political and economic transformation of the country, and provided the ideological justification for, and direction of, that process from 1974 to the end of the century and beyond. The three Ethiopian regimes and university (and high school) students had differing - and often opposing - perceptions of, and attitudes towards, each other's position on important issues, based on political and ideological considerations and strategies. The study identifies the sources for some of the major constraints facing the University, and suggests ways of overcoming them. The broad themes and issues raised can provide the basis for further studies on the role, mission and challenges facing institutions of higher education in the twenty-first century.
