Abstract:This article furnishes a profile of the status and development trajectory of the small and medium enterprise (SMME) economy of Mpumalanga province, South Africa, and highlights select issues concerning the development challenges faced by sections of the SMME economy. More especially, it presents the findings of 90 interviews conducted in 2005 with a cross section of SMME entrepreneurs, including established white entrepreneurs, in the two important sectors of manufacturing and tourism. These sectors both represent important contributors for economic growth and employment creation in Mpumalanga province. Bibliogr. [ASC Leiden abstract]
