Abstract:This paper examines the historical development of the cooperation between the churches of various denominations and the State in the provision of education in Lesotho. It traces the roles played by these institutions in education before and after the colonial era. The paper also examines the efforts of the State to nationalize or take over the control of church schools. It concludes that the current problems of secondary education in particular are the legacy of the British colonial era and the ineffective postcolonial policy reforms. British colonial policy encouraged denominational conflict and left the roles of the major stakeholders in education unclear and ill defined. Ref., sum. [Journal abstract]
