Abstract: | This paper examines the growth of Douentza, Mali, as a rural centre and its changing structure over the past decade. The central question addressed is how this development has been possible and if there are any linkages with the changes in climate and the vulnerability of the region. The study forms part of a larger research programme investigating the effects of climate change on institutional factors and local decisionmaking in three locations in the Sahel, the other two being Kaya in Burkina Faso and Koutiala, also in Mali. The paper focuses on the development of trade and migration, examining rural-urban linkages, income-generating activities, markets and trade activities. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
