| Abstract: | This article analyses South Africa's gold sales policies in the light of contemporary developments in the international gold markets during the 1980s and looks at the main changes in marketing arrangements. Gold sales were a focal point of interest because of the country's dominant position as a gold producer even though its production declined materially. Sales policies remained basically conservative although they were adapted to changing circumstances, which included the steady decline on balance in the dollar price of gold. In particular, the growth of gold futures and options markets created new opportunities for the marketing of South African gold. The escalation of trade sanctions against South Africa in the 1980s spurred new interest in the subject of the beneficiation of metals and minerals which were mined in the country. Ref.
