Abstract: | This paper examines the role of military spending in local economic development (LED) in South Africa. Military bases serve as employers and contribute to the local economy through the procurement of services and goods from suppliers in nearby towns. As an illustration for this argument, the paper analyses the cases of three operational military bases in South Africa, viz. 12 South African Infantry Battalion in Potchefstroom, Airforce Base Louis Trichardt in Louis Trichardt, and Army Gymnasium in Heidelberg. It shows that, in all three cases, many of the opportunities linked to the activities of the military base in their locality were undervalued by local authorities in their LED strategies, despite the base's contributions to the local economy.
