Abstract:This collective volume provides an analytic framework for a vigorous and effective advocacy on behalf of refugees and internally displaced persons in Africa, particularly Ethiopia, the Great Lakes region, Kenya, South Africa, Sudan and Tanzania. It contains revised papers from a conference, organized by the Boston College Center for Human Rights and International Justice, in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services and the Jesuit Refugee Service, in Nairobi, Kenya, in October 2006. Part I (Displacement as a human rights challenge) adresses the issue of rights in the face of pluralism across cultures and religious traditions. Part II (Camps, settlement and human rights) examines the issue of the right to freedom of movement that is problematic for or denied to many refugees. Part III (Gender and the rights of the displaced) looks at the rights of women as criteria for a more adequate response to the struggle of refugees and the internally displaced. Part IV (Conflict, protection and return) turns to analyses of war as the principal cause of displacement and how a human rights perspective can help frame a response. Part V (Ethics and rights in practice) adresses ethical issues in the policies of refugee-serving NGOs and churches.
