| Abstract: | This essay examines the challenges of democratic governance in post-conflict Sierra Leone. It places the 1996 and 2002 elections in the context of the country's complex transition from war to peace. Part of the analysis deals with the role of civil society in the struggle for democracy, which also includes standing against military authoritarianism and the rebel Revolutionary United Front (RUF). It also evaluates post-conflict democratic governance under President Kabbah and explores the prospects and challenges of building democracy in post-war Sierra Leone.
