Sierra Leone. Truth and Reconciliation Commission
Abstract:This essay identifies the challenges posed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's (TRC) documentation of the war atrocities committed against Sierra Leoneans during the civil war (1991-2000). It argues for the proper preservation and dissemination of the documents generated by the TRC process in an effort to build a collective memory. Preservation should include the logical arrangement of the records to enhance accessibility by the research community and the Sierra Leonean public. Access to the TRC documentation is one way of educating the Sierra Leonean people and empowering them with the necessary information that will enable them to reconcile with each other at individual and societal levels, thereby facilitating the democratization of their society.
