Abstract:	This article offers historical insights into the armed conflict in Sudan and the efforts of the AU to find a lasting solution. It posits that the root cause of the conflict can be traced to the British colonial policy of 'divide and rule' which intensified the traditional Afro-Arab dichotomy and laid the foundation for the politics of non-accommodation, which subsequently translated into overt interracial conflict after independence. The article further examines the nature of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) peace process in Sudan and argues that the civil war provides a litmus test for the competence of the AU in conflict resolution on the continent.
