Abstract: | This paper presents a survey of Malawi's energy resources and supply, energy consumption and energy policy issues. It pays attention to biomass, which accounts for c. 97 percent of the country's total energy supply and includes fuelwood from forests and government plantations; coal; petroleum, which has to be imported; electricity; and solar, wind and geothermal energy; security of energy supply; combating deforestation; environmental protection; the promotion of alternative energy sources; the role of economic liberalization and globalization; energy policy formulation; and increased investment in the energy sector as the engine for economic growth and development.
