Abstract:	This paper, based on a talk given in 2006, first presents a brief biography of Edmund Selous (1857-1934), one of the most important pioneers of British bird watching. During the early 1880s, he visited southern Africa, including South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe, often in the company of his brother Frederick. The two brothers had a very different attitude to wildlife. While Frederick had a passion for hunting, Edmund had a profound respect for animals and a growing interest in watching birds instead of shooting them. The remaining part of the paper is devoted to the brothers' travels between 1882 and 1884 through southern Africa. Ref. [ASC Leiden abstract]
