Abstract:This thesis deals with changing family relations in African society in the context of intercontinental mobility. Based on stories of migrants in both urban Mali, notably Segou, and the Netherlands, the book reveals, amongst others, the following changes: the growing importance of consumption, changing sexual norms, upcoming individualism, and conflicts within the extended family. It shows that although Malian migrants in the Netherlands keep in touch with their family back home (mainly by mobile phone) they also succeed in keeping their demanding family members at a distance. The author criticizes the concept of family as used in the social sciences, stressing the dynamics of global family practices and an upcoming individualism in Africa. [ASC Leiden abstract]
