Abstract:Online journals (e-journals) are fast becoming a familiar feature with religious studies scholars, but so far no e-journals in the field have appeared in South Africa, and contributions by South African scholars are still rare. This article examines the evolution of religious studies e-journals, focusing on the open-access variety. It then looks at a sample of open-access e-journals relevant to religious studies, and considers the factors inhibiting South African scholars from participation in publishing in, and creating open-access e-journals. Funding policy seems to be the most important obstacle to such developments. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. [Journal abstract]
