Abstract: | The work of A.C. Jordan offers the present author a basis for an origin and foundation-worrying mode of critique in his exploration of how a particular combination of tradition and resistance becomes a 'real heritage' in South Africa's Eastern Cape and how, centrally, it can and must be seen to be a significant component in the 'heritage complex', which has particular implications of constraint for the making of public histories in South Africa.
