Abstract: | To understand in greater detail the role of civil society in the struggle for democracy in eastern Africa in the mid-1980s, the African Research and Resource Forum (ARRF), in partnership with the Heinrich Böll Foundation, organized a regional workshop in 2008 which was open to a large number of civil society groups as well as the press, public officials and academics. This publication is the result of that exercise. Contents: Section 1, Civil society in Kenya: Reflections on civil society driven change: an overview (Alioune Sall) - Civil society and transition politics in Kenya: historical and contemporary perspectives (Peter Wanyande) - The prospects of civil society driven change in Kenya (Margaret K. Chemengich) - The role of academia in democratization in Kenya (Charles Olungah) - The contribution of academia and civil society in development policy making and budgetary process (Ben Sihanya). Section 2, Civil society in Africa, a comparative analysis: University students and civil society in Nigeria (Okello Oculi) - Civil society and transition politics in Ethiopia (Merera Gudina) - Reflections on democracy and civil society in Zanzibar (Haroub Othman).
