Abstract: | Paleoclimate records show that Africa has experienced extreme, abrupt droughts on millennial to decadal timescales, and other such vagaries of climate and weather are continuing today, with adverse impacts on human societies and ecosystems. This collective volume synthesizes the current knowledge of global environmental change processes and impacts in Africa, covering food security, land use, biodiversity, water resources, nitrogen and carbon cycling, as well as past, present and future climates. It concludes that Africa needs to put adaptation strategies in place so that the impact of global climate change can be minimized. The volume was commissioned by the Pan-African Regional Committee of START, the global change SysTem for Analysis, Research and Training. It is the result of a collective effort by more than thirty young scientists from Africa, most of whom have benefitted from involvement in START activities and projects. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
