Abstract:	According to the Constitution of South Africa (1996), the Defence White Paper (1996) and the Defence Review (1998), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) had to redefine its conception of national security by including human security in its thinking on State Security. Human security principles were then found on all levels of defence and national policies. The SANDF embarked on the application of human security principles to all its operations. Consequently, peacekeeping and humanitarian missions became part of the military's role. Current deployments exceed the number envisaged in the White Paper on Defence, which was initially seen as a limited one. The increased contribution to peacekeeping operations on the African continent indicates a shift in defence policy. Therefore, the White Paper on South African Participation in International Peace Missions (1999) was reviewed to accommodate and reflect the increasing emphasis on collective security in Africa.
