Abstract: | This chapter deals with the adaptation and modification of Western-made lorries in Sudan. It outlines how automobile workshops disassemble vehicles, mainly Bedford and Nissan trucks, rebuild them and adjust them to cope with the harsher conditions and requirements of goods and passenger transport in Sudan. This modding involves a highly sophisticated craft technology and the final product is a completely new truck that barely resembles the original. The chapter not only discusses the appropriation of a piece of industrial technology, but also the social organization of creativity involved. Notes, ref. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
