Abstract: | Based on a preliminary tour of five towns in Kenya, this working paper discusses water sector reforms and interventions in urban Kenya and their emerging impact and challenges. It includes an overview of private sector involvement in the urban water sector and the link between the urban poor, access to water and their livelihoods; a survey of the urban water supply situation, water sector reforms and interventions. The preliminary tour took place in Eldoret, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii and Nakuru. Interviews were conducted in October 2008 with a few officials from the water and sanitation companies and other stakeholders and covered six broad issues: organization and management; network coverage; unaccounted-for-water; metering, billing and revenue; pro-poor programmes; water sector interventions.
