Abstract: | The rapidly growing population and the associated expansion of economic and social activities have increased the demand for urban space around Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital, leading to a rapid conversion of agricultural land to urban use. Based on a survey carried out in 2006 in Addis Ababa's Nefas Silk Lafto district, this paper assesses the capital's expansion onto the surrounding farmlands and its impact on farm households. Specifically, the paper identifies the major effects of this expansion on the 'kebele' or city precinct under study and the displaced farmers. This involves comparing and contrasting the farmers' past and present livelihood status in light of the nature of compensation payments and the search for alternative livelihood strategies sought by the farmers. Finally, the study evaluates some policy issues that the Addis Ababa City Administration has prepared to deal with future urban expansion into the surrounding rural agricultural lands and suggests some options for the future.
