Abstract:From as early as the first century BC, Chinese writers make reference to Africa and indirect contacts, based on trade between the African coast and China, go back to at least the first century AD. This paper traces China's ceramic trade links with Africa and, specifically, sub-Saharan Africa. Ceramics (particularly porcelain) from various dynasties (the Tang dynasty (618-906), the Song dynasty (960-1279), the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368), the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing dynasty (1644-1912) have been found all along the African east coast from Egypt to as far south as Mozambique.
