Abstract: | This paper examines the traditional cosmology of the Igbo of southeastern Nigeria in order to better understand the changes this cosmology underwent during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The study argues that by then, the Aro and their Abam warriors displaced many communities leading to the emergence of new place-names, totems and taboos. The concluding section uses the Igbo example to evaluate existing theories on totems and taboos, raising methodological issues related to the study of African history and culture.
